At the 2025 Google I/O Developer Conference, Android Auto received a significant upgrade. In addition to integrating the Gemini intelligent assistant, this update introduces groundbreaking browser and video app support for the in-car infotainment system. Notably, the Spotify app will also gain a series of innovative features, further enhancing the user's driving experience.
1. Browser and video apps are coming soon
At the Google I/O 2025 conference, it was officially announced that Android Auto will significantly expand its application ecosystem by adding support for video apps and browsers. This feature will initially be available on Android 16 devices and some compatible models. Additionally, support for gaming apps is currently in the testing phase and will enhance the in-car entertainment experience for users in the future.
In terms of video applications, Android Auto will support playing only video audio (audio mode) while driving, and automatically switch to full video playback after parking. Furthermore, the Automotive OS will expand video playback support for the passenger-side screen and rear entertainment screen. The current development and adaptation progress of video applications on various platforms is as follows:
Android Auto: Test version SDK will be released in the fourth quarter of this year, with priority for Android 16.
Android Automotive OS: We are currently working with car companies to enable audio and video listening while driving.
For the browser App, both car contact systems will be supported, but only after parking.
2. Spotify Jam lets multiple people share playlists and controls
Android Auto is set to integrate Spotify Jam in the coming months. This innovative feature allows multiple passengers to share music playback control across their devices. In vehicles with Android Auto, passengers can simply tap the 'Jam' icon on the screen and scan the displayed QR code to add their favorite songs directly to the current playlist. This not only enables drivers to focus more on driving safety without being distracted by music controls but also eliminates the hassle of switching between different devices, making the in-car music sharing experience more seamless and convenient.
This update to Android Auto also introduces Quick Share support, allowing users to add waypoints in Google Maps navigation. The system now supports Passkey passwordless authentication, and the weather app has officially completed its testing phase. Additionally, the light mode theme, which has been in development for years, is now being implemented to enhance the driving visual experience through intelligent light sensing optimization.
